Background of the Study

Pain in elderly patients is a significant healthcare challenge, particularly in low-resource settings like Taraba State, where healthcare infrastructure may be limited. Elderly individuals often experience chronic pain due to various health conditions, including arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Effective pain management is crucial to improving their quality of life, mobility, and overall well-being. However, elderly patients are at a higher risk of adverse effects from analgesic medications, including opioids, due to age-related changes in pharmacokinetics and comorbidities (Seng et al., 2023). Therefore, it is essential to implement effective, individualized pain management strategies that consider both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches.

In Taraba State, the availability of pain management resources, including medications and trained healthcare professionals, may be insufficient. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of current pain management strategies for elderly patients in Taraba State, focusing on the use of appropriate medications, non-pharmacological methods such as physical therapy, and the role of healthcare professionals in tailoring pain management to the needs of elderly individuals.

Statement of the Problem

Chronic pain in elderly patients often goes under-recognized or inadequately managed, leading to decreased mobility, social isolation, and worsened overall health outcomes. In Taraba State, limited access to healthcare resources and insufficient training for healthcare providers may contribute to the ineffective management of pain in older adults. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of the existing pain management strategies and explore the barriers to proper care in elderly patients.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of pain management strategies for elderly patients in Taraba State.
  2. To identify the barriers to effective pain management in elderly patients in Taraba State.
  3. To evaluate the role of healthcare workers in implementing pain management strategies for elderly patients.

Research Questions

  1. What pain management strategies are most commonly used for elderly patients in Taraba State?
  2. What are the barriers to effective pain management for elderly patients in Taraba State?
  3. How do healthcare workers contribute to the effectiveness of pain management strategies for elderly patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Pain management strategies for elderly patients in Taraba State are not sufficiently effective in improving their quality of life.
  2. Barriers such as limited resources and lack of specialized training contribute to the ineffectiveness of pain management for elderly patients in Taraba State.
  3. Healthcare workers play a key role in improving the effectiveness of pain management for elderly patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly patients in urban and rural healthcare facilities in Taraba State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews with healthcare providers, and patient records. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data from healthcare workers and patients, and the variability in pain management practices across different healthcare settings.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pain Management Strategies: Approaches used to reduce or alleviate pain, including pharmacological treatments (e.g., analgesics) and non-pharmacological treatments (e.g., physical therapy, massage).
  • Elderly Patients: Individuals aged 60 and above who experience chronic or acute pain due to age-related health conditions.
  • Healthcare Workers: Medical professionals, including nurses, physicians, and therapists, who provide care to elderly patients.
